Google Play reply character counter

Google Play rejects developer replies longer than roughly 350 characters. Paste your reply below to see the count, where it would be cut, and whether HTML is inflating it. Nothing is sent anywhere — it all runs in your browser.

What is the character limit for a Google Play reply?

Google's API reference states that “replies of more than approximately 350 characters will be rejected.” The word approximately is Google's, not ours — there is no documented hard boundary, which is why this tool starts warning at 320 rather than treating 350 as a cliff. If a reply matters, leave yourself margin.

Does HTML count toward the limit?

Google documents that “HTML tags will be stripped” from replies, and this tool strips them before counting. What Google does not document is whether the tags count toward the limit before stripping. Nobody should tell you they know — the safe approach is to avoid markup in replies entirely.

Why can't I see all of my reviews to reply to?

Three documented limits catch most people out. The Play Developer API “can retrieve only the reviews that users have created or modified within the last week.” Ratings without text are excluded entirely — “if a user rates your app but does not provide a comment, their feedback is not accessible from the API.” And the API exposes “feedback only for production versions of your app,” so alpha and beta testers' reviews never appear.

Can I edit or delete a reply?

Editing is documented: Play Console help states you can “edit your reply to a review at any time.” Deletion is a different matter — Google's documentation does not address deleting a reply at all, neither in the API reference nor in Console help. Anyone stating a definitive rule on deletion is going beyond what Google has published.

What gets a reply removed?

Google asks developers to keep replies clear and relevant, civil, free of solicitation or promotion, and clean. Users can report a developer reply through a link in their notification email, so a reply that breaches those standards can be taken down after the fact.
